"I was a little reclusive and shy in high school," recalls Celine. "I did certain activities, but I really wanted to branch out more in college."

Her goals for her college experience at The University of Toledo extended beyond academic excellence to build a deeper connection with the campus and greater community.

"Going through the recruitment process, I really made connections with who I met," says Celine. "And who I met remembered me when I came back for further visits or discussions."

During a campus tour, Celine had an opportunity to meet faculty in the biochemistry program who she says are concerned about not only teaching the material, but also ensuring that their students apply the information they learn. She also met the dean of the Jesup Scott Honors College who later visited her high school and engaged her in further discussion about her academic goals.

Going through the recruitment process, I really made connections with who I met. I feel that I've become part of the community at UT.

"I really got the feeling that I was going to be at a university that cared about my individual success," says Celine.

At UT, Celine also has connected to the community through campus activities and volunteer opportunities. As a student in the Chemistry Department, she participates in undergraduate research and helps with educational chemistry demonstrations in the community. Through the Honors College, she has connected with elementary school students in need of tutoring in math and science as well as GED students preparing for their exams.

"UT offers students a diverse experience," says Celine. "I really felt that I've fully become a part of the community at UT, even as a first-year student. I've been able to branch out and connect to people on a deeper level."
