Introduction
The Records of the Kiwanis Club of Downtown Toledo document the activities of this service organization through administrative files (including minutes of meetings), subject files, photographs, and publications. The materials date from 1916 to 2011, and provide evidence of the charitable and social programs offered by the club.
Agency History
The Kiwanis Club of Toledo was founded in 1916—just one year after the first Kiwanis club was established in Detroit, Michigan—as a service organization for business professionals. It was the tenth Kiwanis club organized. The first meeting was held on April 2, 1916, at the LaSalle and Koch building in downtown Toledo. After other Kiwanis clubs formed in the area, the original club changed its name to the Kiwanis Club of Downtown Toledo.
The name “Kiwanis” comes from a Native American phrase “Nun Keewanis,” which means “to make oneself known and to impress.” The Kiwanis Club of Downtown Toledo has done this through programs that serve the youth of central Toledo. The organization embraces the six Objects of Kiwanis International, which focus on emphasizing human and spiritual life over material values; living by the Golden Rule; promoting higher social, business and professional standards; providing altruistic service to build better communities; and helping create and maintain public opinion that increases righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.
Locally, the Kiwanis Club of Downtown Toledo sponsors activities for central city youth, offers scholarships to area high school seniors based on academic achievement and community service, and provides grants to non-profit organizations that support the mission of the club. Community service projects are funded through the Good Turn Fund, which was established in 1922. Major fundraisers for the club have included the Pancake Festival and the Peanut Sale. Major projects funded by the club have included a sponsorship of programs for Fulton School in central Toledo, the purchase of a facility to serve as the home for Assistance Dogs of America in Swanton, and the installation of a sculpture and play structure in Promenade Park in downtown Toledo in honor of long-time Kiwanian Thomas A. Catlan. The Kiwanis Club of Downtown Toledo also sponsors a University of Toledo affiliate chapter of Circle K (chartered in 1981), and a chapter of the Key Club at Central High School (chartered in 1990).
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains records documenting the administration of the club and its many philanthropic and social activities from 1916-2011. The collection is divided into seven series based upon record type. Included are administrative files (of particular note are a nearly complete set of minutes of the club’s Board of Directors dating from 1916), limited financial records, membership information, printed material (including club newsletters), subject files that document social and philanthropic activities, photographs, and a few artifacts.
Series I. Administrative Files
Series contains meeting minutes, organizational documentation, correspondence, monthly reports, and weekly meeting agendas.
Series II. Financial Records
Series includes information on budgets, dues, and statements of the “Good Turn” fund, which underwrites community projects.
Series III. Membership Files
Series documents club membership, including resignations. Additional membership information can be found in the published membership directories, filed in the Printed Material series.
Series IV. Photographs
Includes photographs of club meetings, activities, and community service projects. Several photographic albums containing miscellaneous photographs were dismantled for preservation reasons. Many of the photographs are undated.
Series V. Printed Materials
Includes copies of the club’s newsletters, printed membership directories, Ohio district membership directories, and other publications from both the local club and the national organization. The newsletters are arranged in chronological order, followed by other publications arranged in alphabetical order by title.
Series VI. Subject files
Files document many club activities, meeting programs, and community service projects.
Series VII. Artifacts
Includes three dimensional objects documenting aspects of the club.
