Historical Sketch

The first Rotary Club was founded in Chicago on February 23, 1905 by Paul Harris, a lawyer.  Harris, who had recently moved to Chicago, wanted to become better acquainted with other professional men of the city.  Through a discussion with fellow professionals, Harris and his friends decided to organize a club to bring together a carefully selected group of businessmen, one from each trade, and let them get to know each other so that it would be unthinkable to do business unethically.  Only men who were the proprietors of a business, partners in a business, or a corporate officer would be allowed to join; in this way, all of the members would be men of authority in their field and would share similar interests.  Membership was by invitation only, and the name Rotary Club was chosen because the weekly meetings would rotate between the members’ places of business.  The mottos “Service above Self” and “He Gains the Most who Serves the Best” were chosen to represent the goal of the newly formed club.  The idea of Rotary spread throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.  In 1912, the name “International Association of Rotary Clubs” was adopted to issue charters to clubs outside of the United States.

The year 1912 also marked the beginning of the Toledo Rotary. On May 3rd of that year, Charles S. Turner, at the urging of a Rotarian friend from Cleveland, founded the Rotary Club of Toledo.  Toledo was the 44th Rotary Club to be chartered by Rotary International.  The 1912 Convention was also the first time that the Toledo Rotary Club was represented by delegates.  By the end of its first year, the Toledo Rotary boasted 80 members.

In 1917, Toledo Rotary, along with the Board of Education, helped to establish a school for crippled children.  Helping crippled children soon evolved into one of the major charitable works of Toledo Rotary. Other works include the development of a camp for Boy Scouts; a convalescent home for crippled children; international medical aid for those in need; capital improvements to existing agencies when local, state, and federal funds are not available; and providing scholarships to the University of Toledo for international students.  The Toledo Rotary was also instrumental in forming a juvenile court system in Toledo.   The Good Fellowship Foundation, to which members are obligated to contribute, helps to support these and various other charitable activities.  The Paul Harris Fellow is a title awarded to members who have contributed $1000 or more to the Good Fellowship Fund, and these moneys support scholarships for 1000 scholars.

In 1959, the Four-Way Test was created.  This test, designed for Rotarians to apply to all aspects of their lives, states that before a member undertakes to do something he should ask himself:

  1. Is it the Truth?
  2. Is it fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Through this Four-Way Test as well as living up to the motto “Service Above Self,” the Toledo Rotary Club has grown from the initial 80 members to nearly 500.  This mirrors the growth of Rotary from the first club in Chicago to 26,000 clubs consisting of 1,000,000 members in 200 countries.

Scope and Content Note

The records of the Toledo Rotary Club are composed of administrative records, committee files, correspondence, membership records, club projects, and records of the Good Fellowship Foundation as well as scrapbooks, artifacts, and other materials detailing the history of the Toledo Rotary Club and Rotary International.  While several documents date to the club’s earlier years, later decades (1970s on) are better documented.

The collection is divided into twelve primary series and arranged alphabetically, then chronologically.  (S1) Administration pertains to the general matters of running the club.  It contains files of the Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, District Assemblies and Conferences, as well as general office files.  (S2) Committee Files, contains the minutes, reports, and various projects undertaken by the individual committees within the club, such as the Budget Committee, Membership Committee, and Program Committee.  (S3) Correspondence includes general club correspondence in addition to the Club President's correspondence and correspondence detailing the various speakers and programs sponsored by the club throughout the years.  (S4) Membership contains information on membership classifications, attendance, honorary members, former members, and senior members.  (S5) Publications is divided into four subseries. The largest subseries consists of clippings of articles pertaining to the Toledo Rotary that appeared in local newspapers from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s, early1990s, and early 2000s.  This series also contains press releases, a small number of issues of The Toledo Rotary Spoke, and one miscellaneous publication, The Crippled Child(S6) Photographs, consists largely of framed photographs of various early Rotary members. Many were members of the Toledo Rotary, but some served as officers of Rotary International.  There are also two folders of miscellaneous photographs of club members and club activities.  Most of the photographs are undated, with known years being indicated in the inventory.  (S7) Projects is made up of the files of various club projects undertaken by Toledo Rotary, as well as funding requests sent to Toledo Rotary and project proposals that were not approved by the club.  (S8) Rotary International is a small series pertaining to the International Rotary organization.  (S9) Toledo Rotary Good Fellowship Foundation/Toledo Rotary Foundation, an endowment fund of Toledo Rotary, consists of the projects and scholarships undertaken by the Good Fellowship Foundation, board of trustees’ files of the Foundation, as well as a history of the Foundation itself.  (S10) Toledo Rotary consists entirely of materials pertaining to the history of the Toledo Club as well as scrapbooks dating from the founding of the club through the early 1930s. Some of the earliest scrapbooks are on microfilm, but most are fragile and in poor condition. (S11) Rosters includes copies of the rosters of the Toledo Rotary Club 1915-1916, 1918-1919, 1921-1998. (S12) Miscellaneous consists of various materials that do not fit clearly into any of the previous series. Some of these materials include calendars, lapel pins, a yearbook published by graduating students at Feilbach High School, early documents pertaining to the creation of Rotary, and a framed recognition presented by the Ohio House of Representatives to Toledo Rotary in honor of the club’s 75th anniversary in 1987.
