Biographical Sketch

Patricia A. Murphy obtained her B.A. degree in English Literature from the University of Minnesota, her M.S. degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from St. Cloud State University, and her Ph.D. in Women’s Studies and Rehabilitation from the Union Institute and University.  Dr. Murphy holds the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor credential from the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification. In 1994 she was the first Women's Health Policy Fellow at the Center for Research on Women and Gender at the University of Illinois. In 1997 she was the recipient of the Founder's Award for "Pioneering Work on the Behalf of Domestic Violence Survivors" by Chicago Women Connecting. Dr. Murphy is currently director of the Catherine S. Eberly Center for Women, and holds faculty appointments in the Department of Women’s & Gender Studies and the Disability Studies Program. She was one of the founders of the Disability Studies Program, and served as its interim director.

At The University of Toledo, she has taught a range of classes, including: Feminism and Disability WGST 4210, Feminism, Disability, and Representation MLS 6010/6500, Disability in the United States DST 2020, Definitions of Disability DST 3020, Issues in Disability Studies DST 3030, Research and Methodologies in Disability Studies DST 4890, and Internship in Disability Studies DST 4940.

Of her many research interests, Dr. Murphy’s main concerns lie in the subjects of feminism and disability, violence against women with and without disabilities, the impact of violence on women’s educational and career aspirations and achievements, and disability history. She is also deeply concerned with the effects of childhood incest and abuse. Dr. Murphy has been involved with women’s and gender studies for an extensive period of time, and in the early 1990’s was a delegate to Russia for women’s studies.

Dr. Murphy’s recent achievements include the development of the Disability Studies Program in the College of Arts & Sciences. This program offered an interdisciplinary minor and a concentration found within the B.A. Program in Law and Social Thought.  The Ability Center of Greater Toledo (a local independent living center for people with disabilities) funded the Program in a gift of $1.9 million.

Over her long and fruitful career, Patricia Murphy has published many articles and books in the areas of women’s and disabilities studies. Some of her more recent publications include: The Dynamics of Trauma & Disability, Review of Disability Protests: Contentious Politics – 1970-1999 for Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries.  2/06/02; “Quality of Life: A Comprehensive Model for Rehabilitation Assessment in Litigation,” (with John M. Scope and Content Note

Series I consists of articles on the topic of quality of life issues collected for the extensive literature review used in writing the book Assessment of Rehabilitative Issues in Quality of Life Litigation, by Murphy and John M. Williams.  The articles are arranged in alphabetical order by author’s last name.  In the case of a booklet or pamphlet, the publishing company was considered the author.  The folder titled “Unreferenced Articles” includes articles that were considered in the book project, but were ultimately excluded.

Series II contains newspaper clippings, articles, memos, communications, publishing contracts, and conference information regarding the career and research interests of Dr. Murphy. These subjects include women’s studies, issues in feminism, lesbian publications, as well as disabilities and trauma related information.  Also included in the collection are some of Dr. Murphy’s personal communications.
