Historical/Biographical Sketch

Robert N. Whiteford was a professor of English at the University of Toledo from 1910 to 1938. During his 36 years at the University, he wrote several articles and papers on various subjects in literature. Also, he published books on poetry and literary figures. After retiring in 1938 at the age of 67, he enrolled in a university program enabling emerita professors to research and write papers on a regular basis for the University in return for supplemental income. He wrote essays from 1945-1951, although he took it easy as he had an illness he believed was brought on from overworking himself. In his memory, the University of Toledo Graduate College established the Robert N. Whiteford Memorial Scholarship for assistance in research.
