Historical/Biographical Sketch

Newton Rochte was born on June 29th, 1920 in Bowling Green, Ohio. He graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Science, and earned both his masters and Ph.D. from the Ohio State University. After serving in World War II, Dr. Rochte returned to Ohio State where he worked with the office of radio education and OSU’s station, WOSU. Dr. Rochte also acted as a supervisor of home study courses in citizenship for aliens in Ohio for the Bureau for Special and Adult Education.

On June 27th, 1952, Dr. Rochte moved north to the University of Toledo. He was named assistant director of evening sessions and assistant professor of education. In 1956, Dr. Rochte was promoted to director of the Junior College. Following this appointment, Dr. Rochte became instrumental in transforming the Junior College into the university’s Community and Technical College. In 1963, Dr. Rochte was named dean of the new college as it became the fastest growing college on campus, averaging about a thirty percent increase each year.

Upon being named professor emeriti, Dr. Rochte retired in 1984. He held membership in Phi Delta Kappa, the Ohio Education Association, the National Education Association, the Toledo Area Chamber of Commerce, and Association for Higher Education. Newton Rochte died on March 5th, 2011 at the age of 90.


Scope and Content Note

The collected papers of Newton Rochte focus on the establishment of the University of Toledo’s Community and Technical College. The collection primarily contains correspondence and memoranda concerning various aspects of the developing college. Also included are the development reports on the college and higher education in general as well as annual reports dating from 1962-1977. Some information regarding the Junior College, ComTech’s predecessor, are a part of Dr. Rochte’s collection.

Contains various correspondence dating from 1956 to 1973, respectively. Concerning the building of the Junior College and various other topics. Of note are the conversations with Presidents Carlson and Driscoll.
