Historical/Biographical Sketch

Charles L. DeBenedetti was born on January 27, 1943. A Chicago native, he earned a bachelor of science degree from Loyola University (1964) and a master of arts (1965) and doctor of philosophy (1968) degrees from the University of Illinois, Urbana. In 1968, DeBenedetti joined the University of Toledo History Department and taught courses in the history of U.S. foreign relations and peace movements in American History. DeBenedetti joined the UT faculty as an assistant professor of history, was named associate professor in 1972, and a professor of history in 1978.
In addition to An American Ordeal: The Antiwar Movement of the Vietnam Era, 1990, DeBenedetti published The Peace Reform in American History, 1982, and Origins of the Modern American Peace Movement, 1915-1929, 1979. He also wrote various articles on American and diplomatic history and the peace movement.
DeBenedetti received a Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Fellowship in 1979 for his research on the antiwar movement from 1961-1975. In 1980, the foundation invited him to reside at its Bellagio Study and Conference Center in Italy for four weeks while drafting an essay on the antiwar movement. Too, he was a guest lecturer on dissent and Vietnam at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1980 and 1983.
DeBenedetti devoted a great deal of effort to the Council on Peace Research in History. He was on the Executive Council from 1973 and served as both secretary-treasurer and president. In 1984 he co-edited Peace and Change.
In 1982, DeBenedetti drew national attention when he uncovered a previously classified top secret report from the CIA to President Lyndon Johnson. It indicated that the CIA believed there was no Communist link to American protests against the Vietnam War, a situation the President refused to accept. DeBenedetti uncovered the report during his research at the Johnson Presidential Library in Austin, Texas.
Charles DeBenedetti died of a brain tumor on January 27, 1987- his 44th birthday. Charles Chatfield, a professor of history at Wittenberg University, completed DeBenedetti’s last book, An American Ordeal: The Antiwar Movement of the Vietnam Era, in 1990.
