Historical/Biographical Sketch

Dr. Harold Oddy, a native of Lancaster, Canada and prominent faculty member, joined the University of Toledo’s expanding Chemistry department in 1928. Beginning as instructor of chemistry, Dr. Oddy was promoted to professor in 1942 and was named chairman of UT’s Department of Chemistry in 1944, a position he held until 1965. Together with professor and former chairman of the biology department, Howard Bowman, Oddy was one of the two men for which the Bowman-Oddy Laboratory building was named after its completion in 1967.
Dr. Oddy graduated in 1920 from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He received his master’s degree from the University of Toronto, University of Toledo, Oddy lectured at the University of Alberta, and was assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Florida at Gainesville and the Oregon State Agricultural College, now Oregon State University.
During his lengthy career at the University of Toledo, Dr. Oddy was active in the scholarly community, publishing technical papers in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and many other professional periodicals. He also co-authored an organic chemistry notebook and study guide published by UT. Oddy was a member of the Toledo section of the American Chemical Society for over twenty-five years, at one time or another, holding every office in the chapter, while also serving in the Society’s national chemical education division. Dr. Oddy has also been noted for his fifteen year contribution to UT’s Athletic and Control Board, as well as his service to the graduate study, research, and scholarship committees. Professor Oddy was a member of Phi Kappa Phi scholastic honor society and the Ohio Academy of Science, and was listed in Who’s Who in the Midwest.
Harold Oddy was given the title of emeritus at the June 1969 commencement, which marked his retirement. He died in Toledo at the age of seventy-five following hospitalization for a heart attack. Following his death, the newly-dedicated biology-chemistry building was named for him to honor his over forty-year career at the university.
