Historical/Biographical Sketch

A specialist in the history of the southwestern United States and Native American cultures, Dr. Gerald Thompson was born in Oakland, California in 1948 and grew up in Tucson, Arizona. He attended the University of Arizona from which he received his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate of philosophy degrees in history. Dr. Thompson served from 1969 to 1975 with the Arizona Army National Guard.

He began his professional career as a counselor at the Arizona Department of Corrections (1970-1971). He then became a special research assistant to the Arizona Academy Project (1972). While at the University of Arizona as a graduate student, he was a teaching associate (1972-1975) and editorial assistant for Arizona and the West (1975-1978). He was an instructor at Pima College during the fall of his last year of college (1977). After obtaining his Ph.D. he was hired at the University of Toledo as an associate professor and became a full professor in 1988. He served as a visiting instructor at the University of Arizona (1984), and Arizona State University (1990). While at the University of Toledo, he was selected as editor of The Historian, a scholarly journal published by Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honorary.

Dr. Thompson published frequently in his area of expertise. His books include The Army and the Navajo: The Bosque Redondo Reservation Experiment, 1863-1868 (1982) and Edward F. Beale and the American West (1983). He published many articles in scholarly journals and presented numerous papers at professional conferences as well as being a frequent book reviewer. He also published a book with Larry D. Wilcox titled A Guide to history Related Microfilm Holdings at the University of Toledo (1986).

Dr. Thompson served on many committees at the University of Toledo. He was the director of graduate studies, and served on search committees both for the History Department and the College of Arts and Sciences. He received the Exceptional Merit Award, College of Arts and Sciences, in 1985 and 1991. Dr. Thompson was listed in the 45th ed. of Who’s Who in America. He also belonged to such honorary societies as Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Alpha Theta. He was also a member of the American Historical Association, Organization of American Historians, Arizona Historical Society, Western History Association, Society of California Pioneers, and the Ohio Academy of History.

Dr. Thompson died on May 2, 1998, ending his career as one of the top specialists in his field of study.


Scope and Content Note

This collection contains the papers of Gerald Thompson, professor of history at the University of Toledo from 1978 to 1998. The collection is arranged in four series, depending on subject matter, and spans the years 1969-1998.

Professional Materials
This series contains items from his academic career at the University of Toledo and University of Arizona. Included are Dr. Thompson’s annual reports, documenting his professional accomplishments. Also included are UT Department of History Meeting minutes and bylaws, Phi Alpha theta history honorary information, and material regarding his editorship of The Historian. The series also contains personal and professional correspondence.

Academic Classroom Materials
This series contains University of Arizona class notes created by Thompson while a student as well as syllabi, tests, lecture notes, and handouts for classes that he taught at UT.

Scholarly Writings and Research

 

This series contains book reviews, conference papers, and journal articles written by Thompson spanning the years 1969-1995. Also included is information on his books, the Army and the Navajo, and Edward F. Beale and the American West. This consists of correspondence regarding these books as well as book reviews and publication information. Some research materials gathers for Edward F. Beale and the American West are included.

Later Materials

 

This series was an addition to the collection and consists of materials that Thompson kept in his personal filing cabinets in Tucker Hall, the Department of history. Series includes letters of recommendation, specific personal correspondence, sabbatical information, and other papers regarding his work in the department.
