Experiential Learning Program Guidelines

Library will provide:

  • The library will provide experiential learning opportunities for up to two visual arts students for the creation of a second floor mural celebrating the University’s sesquicentennial.    
  • The library has made available a 39’x 8.5’ located on south side of the second floor of the Carlson Library. This wall fronts the south side stairwell and has been clearly marked for candidates to view before starting their submission process.    
  • Hourly wages will be $11 per hour     
  • Library will supply all necessary art supplies, based on the list of materials submitted by the artist(s) in the application package.
  • Library will provide access to research materials and UToledo history experts to aid artists in design creation.  
  • Library will work in partnership with the artist(s) to promote the artwork through the university and local media. Past artists have been featured in several campus publications, as well as local newspapers and television.
  • Library will document the progress and provide the artist(s) with e-portfolio content including a photo history showcasing the progression of work from start to finish, and a video montage highlighting their work and their experiences.    
  • Projects will provide artists opportunities for growth in the areas of creativity, design, problem solving, collaboration, reflection, time management, budgeting, material procurement, etc.  

Student Artist Requirements

  • Two weeks after having been chosen from the initial application pool, the selected artist(s) will present a complete visual proposal to the library. This proposal in either storyboard or PowerPoint format will elaborate on the design ideas presented during the application process. This presentation must include; timeline, materials requirements, any identified site issues and possible solutions, overall design layout and research considerations prior to beginning the project.   
  • Artist(s) must commit to a 10-15 hour workweek. It is understood that at certain times such as exam or review periods the work hours may be less.    
  • Artist(s) must be able to work a minimum of one in-person 4-hour shift during regular library business hours, M-F 9:00-5:00. Additional work during business hours is recommended.   
  • While working in-person on the mural, artist(s) must engage other students and library visitors to answer questions about the artwork being produced and the artistic processes being used.  
  • Artist(s) will be scheduled to meet with the director of operations bi-weekly to provide detailed updates. Artist(s) must also meet with/update the Department Chair and the Head of Studio on a bi-weekly basis during the course of the project.
  • Artist(s) will make themselves available for promotional opportunities arranged by the library.    
  • Artist(s) are hired as part of the library’s student work force and will be expected to follow all library policies, including the documentation of time worked (time cards).   
  • Artist(s) will provide samples of their artwork, an artist’s statement, and bio to be placed on display near the project work site. All above listed materials must be submitted within 2-weeks of hire or work cannot begin on the project.   
  • Artist(s) will participate in periodic interviews to aid in the creation of e-portfolio content and as an assessment tool.  
  • Should problems arise impacting the completion of the artwork, the student(s) must immediately contact the Director of Operations as well as the Chair of the Department of Art and the Head of Studio.
  • Artist(s) should understand that artwork created during this experiential learning program is meant as a learning process and may be removed or painted over at the library’s discretion.
