 March 17   Acceptance letters emailed
 April 3  Commitment letters from prospective students due;
 Waiting list students notified
 May 30  Students move into dorm
 Week 1;

 Orientation week, site visits, group bonding experience

  • May 31: Meet & Greet, pre-program survey, program overview, Lake Erie shoreline field trip
  • June 1: Project planning with REU students, graduate student mentors & faculty mentors, Lake Erie Field trip to marshland, boat trawl, dredge sampling, dinner & evening lecture
  • June 2: Continued planning followed by presentations of project ideas by REU students, afternoon barbeque at the LEC with program partners
 Weeks 2-7;

 Project Data Collection weeks and Building Research Skills
  • Students work in the research labs or field with faculty & graduate student mentors
  • Wednesday afternoons each week:
    • Wed. 1:00: REU luncheon for all team 
    • Wed. 1-4:30:  Joint project mentoring on the following topics:
      • June 7:  Project Hypothesis formulation
      • June 14:  Experimental design
      • June 21:  Resume writing and applying to jobs/Graduate School
      • June 28:  Data analyses, approaches & pitfalls
      • July 5:  How to write a scientific paper
      • July 12:  How to give effective oral & poster presentations
  • Thursday evenings (every other week): Graduate-undergraduate student social event/activity
 Week 8;
 July 17-21
  • REU student project data analyses workshops led by graduate student mentors
  • Poster presentation & paper writing help sessions
  • Wed. barbeque luncheon & career workshop, with agency guests & graduate student alumni
  • Thurs. evening: Graduate-undergraduate student social event
 Week 9;
 July 24-28
  • REU student poster show & reception for faculty, students, agency personnel, community partners, visitors (Wednesday, July 27)
  • REU student papers due Friday, July 29
  • End of program evaluation exit survey Friday noon, followed by capstone lunch picnic

REU student presentations at IAGLR (International Association of Great Lakes Research) annual conference; additional mentoring group experience for REU students
 2018-2020  Annual tracking of REU students, publications, output, careers
