Tips for SAM using JAWS

To access SAM:

  1. Go to the Student Disability Services website at www.utoledo.edu/offices/student-disability-services/sam/
  2. Type the letter G to go to the next graphic on the page until you find the SAM banner labeled “Click here to login to Student Accessibility Management”
  3. Click on the Student Accessibility Management link to be redirected to the SAM login page.
  4. Type the letter E to go to the first edit field on the page.
  5. Enter your UTAD information in the username and password boxes to login.

Add Requests in SAM:

  1. Follow the steps to “Access SAM”
  2. Type the letter X to go to the first combo box on the page.
  3. Check each check box for each class that you want to request accommodations in.
  4. Click on the button after all the checkboxes to future customize your accommodations.
  5. Type the letter X to go to the first checkbox on the page.
  6. Select the check boxes for the accommodations you wish for the given class.
  7. Continue to check the boxes for the accommodations you wish to use for all of your classes.
  8. When you are finished, click the submit button.

Your request will appear as processing until it is approved by your Academic Accommodation Specialist.

A copy of your Advocacy Memo will be sent to you and your professor in an email. Please discuss your advocacy memo with your professor and if you have any questions please contact Student Disability Services.

Changing Requests in SAM:

If you find you no longer need an accommodation or need to add an accommodation for a class:

  1. Follow the steps to “Access SAM”
  2. Type the letter H to move down the page by headings until you find “Term Navigation”
  3. Select your desired term for which you would like to change your requests
  4. Type the letter H to move by heading until you find “ACCOMMODATION REQUEST INFORMATION FOR [class]” where [class] is the class you want to change the requests
  5. Select the “Modify Request” link
  6. Type the letter X to go to the first checkbox on the page
  7. Check or uncheck the checkboxes for the accommodation you wish to use or no longer need
  8. Once you have made all the necessary changes, select the “Update Request” button

Your request will appear as processing until it is approved by your Academic Accommodation Specialist.

A copy of your updated Advocacy Memo will be sent to you and your professor in an email. Please discuss your updated advocacy memo with your professor and if you have any questions please contact Student Disability Services.

Canceling a Class in SAM:

If you drop or withdraw from a class and need to cancel your accommodations:

  1. Follow the steps to “Access SAM”
  2. Type the letter H to move down the page by headings until you find “Term Navigation”
  3. Select your desired term for which you would like to cancel your requests
  4. Type the letter H to move by heading until you find “ACCOMMODATION REQUEST INFORMATION FOR [class]” where [class] is the class you want to cancel the requests
  5. Select the “Cancel Request” link
  6. Type the letter C to go to the first combo box
  7. Select the reason for canceling services with this class
  8. Select the “Cancel Accommodation Request” button

Your request will appear as processing until it is approved by your Academic Accommodation Specialist. If you have any questions please contact Student Disability Services.

Checking Notes:

  1. Follow the steps to “Access SAM”
  2. Select the “Skip to Sub-Tab Navigation” link
  3. Click the “Notetaking Services” link
  4. Select the link that says, “Skip to Main Content”
  5. Find the class you want to download notes for
  6. Click the link that says, “Available Note(s) for Download (Click to Expand)” to see the list of notes available
  7. Download the notes you want by clicking on the file

If no notetaker is assigned for your particular class, please contact Student Disability Services.

Scheduling tests:

  1. Follow the steps to “Access SAM”
  2. Select the “Skip to Sub-Tab Navigation” link
  3. Click the “Alternative Testing” link
  4. Type the letter C to go to the first combo box on the page
  5. Select your class from the combo box
  6. Click the “Schedule an Exam” button to schedule an exam
  7. Select the “Skip to Main Content” link
  8. Carefully read the “TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SCHEDULING EXAM”
  9. Select the exam type in the “Request Type” combo box
  10. Fill in the date in the Month/Day/Year format
  11. Select the time you would like to take the exam in the “Time” combo boxes
  12. Check the requested services you would like to use for the exam
  13. Once all of the fields are filled out, select the “Add Exam Request” button

Your request will appear as processing until it is approved by the Testing Coordinator.

If your class is not displayed in the combo box, your professor has not submitted a testing contract. Please contact your professor and ask them to fill out a testing contract that was sent to them with your Advocacy Memo. If you have any questions, contact Student Disability Services. 

Checking Status of E-text:

  1. Follow the steps to “Access SAM”
  2. Click the link that says, "Skip to Sub-Tab Navigation"
  3. Click the link that says, "Alternative Formats"
  4. Click the link that says, "Skip to Main Content"
  5. Select the term you would like to check the status of E-text
  6. Press the letter T to go to the next table on the page
  7. Navigate the table to find the class in which you would like to download the book for.
  8. Under the column "Status", the current status of the book will be displayed.
  9. To download the book, click the "Download" link in that column
  10. A new window will pop up and allow you to add the book to your personal Dropbox or to download the book in a .zip folder.

If you do not need a book from a particular class or you would like to add additional books or select different format, please contact Student Disability Services as soon as possible.

Checking My Mailbox:

  1. Follow the steps to “Access SAM”
  2. Click the link that says, “Skip to Sub-Tab Navigation”
  3. Click the link that says, “My Mailbox (Sent E-Mails)”
  4. Type the letter T to go to the first table on the page
  5. Click on the “View” link of the message you would like to view

On this page, the message will be displayed. If you have any questions about the messages, please contact Student Disability Services.

Show Checked Out Equipment:

  1. Follow the steps to “Access SAM”
  2. Click the link that says, “Skip to Sub-Tab Navigation”
  3. Click on the link that says, “Equipment Checked Out”
  4. Click on the link, “Skip to Main Content”

On this page it will display the list of equipment you have checked out on loan. If you have any questions, please contact Student Disability Services.
