The Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (B.S.P.S.) degree is a four-year baccalaureate program that includes a required internship. The pharmaceutical sciences represent the collective basic sciences that underlie pharmacy. This degree program is designed for students who wish to attend medical school or pursue careers related to the pharmaceutical industry, pharmaceutical science and research, pharmacy administration and sales, the biomedical industry, forensic science, and healthcare administration. It also prepares students to enter law school or pursue graduate studies. There are five majors in this degree program.

Graduates of the B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences program have a variety of career paths from which to choose, including medicine, nursing, pre-clinical research and development, clinical and regulatory affairs, product marketing and sales, science writing and editing, investment analysis, forensic science, product testing, and manufacturing. Our graduates are in high demand because of their unique training and preparation.

Pre-Med, Pharmaceutical Sciences

The B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences is an excellent choice for Pre-Med education. Majoring in Medicinal and Biological Chemistry or in Pharmacology/Toxicology will place you ahead of the curve in medical school and will make your medical school application unique.

B.S.P.S. Scholars

The B.S.P.S. Scholars program recognizes highly qualified direct from high school students who intend to study pharmaceutical/medical sciences and pursue graduate school or medical professions (physician, veterinarian, dentistry). B.S.P.S. Scholars participate in undergraduate research training over the summer following their freshman year (stipend provided for living expenses). Scholars are offered unique experiences to introduce them to the pharmaceutical sciences and learn leadership skills by developing relationships with industry professionals. 

B.S./M.S. IN MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY

B.S./M.S. in Medicinal Chemistry is an additional degree option that allows students to obtain both a B.S. and M.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences degree in five calendar years. Students in the B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences program choose a faculty mentor as an internship mentor during the undergraduate years and continue the M.S. thesis research with the same mentor.
 

B.S./M.S. IN PHARMACOLOGY/TOXICOLOGY

The B.S./M.S. in Pharmacology/Toxicology is an additional degree option that allows students to obtain both a B.S. and M.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences degree in five calendar years. Students in the B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences program choose a faculty mentor as an internship mentor during the undergraduate years and continue the M.S. thesis research with the same mentor.

Admission Requirements for B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences

The University of Toledo requires specific completion of college preparatory curriculum course work for admission consideration.  The minimum academic core requirements are:

  • 4 years of English
  • 3 years of math (Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry)
  • 3 years of natural sciences
  • 3 years of social science

To be admitted into the pre-pharmacy program, students must meet the following requirements:

  • >2.5 High School GPA or >20 ACT or 950 SAT (combined reading & math; test dates prior to March 2016) or 1030 new SAT (test dates March 2016 and later) or >170 GED (for each of the 4 subject scores)

Students not meeting these requirements will be admitted to the Department of Exploratory Studies in the College of Languages, Literature and Social Sciences.

Direct Admission

TRANSFER STUDENTS

Transfer students can be admitted into either the first or second year of prerequisites, depending on the number of science-related courses already successfully completed. Transfer students can expect to matriculate for a minimum of five years for the PharmD degree. Transfer students are considered second-year students if a full year of the appropriate general chemistry and biology courses (with all labs) has been taken. College faculty evaluates courses for equivalencies, and transfer students must submit syllabi for evaluation if they are requested. More about transferring into the college.
