University Libraries including Carlson Library are increasingly supplementing their old-format bodies of knowledge that once occupied real shelf space with new bodies of knowledge that occupy cyberspace. DX-related material in cyberspace includes Internet GR&T "blogs."

The term "blog" derives from "web log," which is a highly personalized journal or diary made publicly available by its owner as an Internet website. The activity of updating a blog is "blogging" and someone who keeps a blog is a "blogger."

Blogging is a very recent phenomenon, though the personal diary as a literary form began centuries ago with the invention of the printing press. Mass publishing technology first enabled the spread of multi-purpose personal journals and diaries. After centuries nearly everyone could publish their personal thoughts and opinions in hardcopy. Internet electronic diaries emerged simultaneously with the launching of the first personal web site in the early 1990s. The descriptive term "weblog" first appeared in the mid-1990s.

By the end of the millennium enterprising commercial websites were first beginning to offer amateur publishers the ability to publish their own blogs, and then with the advent of camera cell phones, their own "moblogs" (mobile blogs). Video-camera cell phones are the latest blog-enhancing invention. Today anyone with access to a computer can easily learn to blog. Commercial websites for amateur bloggers nowadays offer free set-ups with trial terms. Young, graphics-oriented females appear to comprise the majority of bloggers today.

GR&T Peoples are among the many groups that manifest in cyberspace as cyber-cultures. Many GR&T group members are accomplished bloggers. They carefully design and keep their blogs for various purposes, including intra-group and intra-group communication. Carlson Library recognizes and commends the skills of GR&T youth bloggers throughout the United States as they constantly push the limits of creativity involving a wide array of audio and video design made available to them by a variety of commercial photoblog sites. The Carlson Library DX website team will select exemplary GR&T blogs on a monthly basis for display.

Visitors to these ephemeral GR&T moblogs may require the very latest "plug-ins" to be able to capture and appreciate the full range of creativity of their owners.
