Writing Theory - Course Descriptions

ENGL 4090: Current Writing Theory (WAC)
(cross-listed as ENGL 5090)

Catalog:  A study of current theory and research connecting literacy, reading, critical thinking and writing with applications of theory to students' writing practice.

Specifically, we will focus on certain key concepts and theories in the field of composition that guide research and practice, including theories related to the writing process, literacy development, collaborative writing, assessment, writing and cognition, and social issues related to writing development. To better understand these concepts and the underlying theories, we will read a variety of texts and each student will complete course papers, presentations, and a final exam.  The class will be primarily discussion-based (both full class and small group), with some lecture and student presentation involved.
