  4. Dean’s Report: Melissa Gregory

The Departments of Geography & Planning and Economics submitted a proposal to Choose Ohio First for STEM education scholarships; UToledo was awarded $1,075,999, enough to offer 19 new students per cohort 4k/year, Fall 2024 – Fall 2027.

The Dean’s Office would like to host faculty for lunch to discuss best practices for teaching the University Core. Contact Associate Dean Ed Lingan if interested.

The recommended method of communication with students is via faculty-student UToledo email. Students are required, per University policy, to use their UToledo email, which is open record and creates a paper trail that demonstrates professionalism. Instructors should not directly text from their personal phone to students. If an instructor believes that texting is essential in specific circumstances, it is best to get the students’ permission for specific situations, such as rehearsal reminders or meeting updates. If necessary, redirect students to your UToledo email as the mode of communication. Avoid sending or responding to personal or academic evaluation type text messages.

  5.  Executive Committee Report: Ammon Allred
    No report.

  6. Faculty Senate Report: Gaby Semaan

The Faculty Senate met on November 7. The Executive Committee report reminded faculty to complete the survey sent by Faculty Senate. Faculty Senate wrote a letter of support for students from the Middle East with reminders about campus resources; it was sent to the Board of Trustees for distribution.

Banner will automatically fill in workload for all faculty beginning December 9.

Colleges are encouraged to have discussions with faculty about their College’s Strategic Plan.

The searches for the Provost and deans of CAL, Nursing, and HHS are ongoing.

Will Lucas, Chair of the Board of Trustees, visited Senate. He said the University is considering hiring consultants to help UToledo define our identity as a university, and asked faculty to send ideas to him on that topic via email.

Dan McGinnis of the Honors College shared his own concerns about the changes happening with the Honors College and programs.

Note: Faculty Senate Minutes are available on their website.

  11. Old Business

  12. New Business
Guest Dave Meredith, VP of Enrollment Management discussed the strategies and efforts currently underway to grow new student enrollment. The goal is to diversify and recruit more transfer, adult, and international students considering the national declining DHS population. UToledo has been up in new students in those categories for the last 3 semesters. Overall enrollment is down primarily because of large numbers of graduating students, retention challenges, and lower DHS population. In-state within 50 miles: UToledo does better in terms of percentage of Lucas County high school students attending than does OSU in Franklin County and UC in Hamilton County; however, those counties are significantly larger in population. In-state over 50 miles: UToledo needs to increase DHS enrollment from Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati. Our numbers are lower than BGSU and OU from those areas and we have spotty success primarily due to regional recruiter staff turnover. Yield from applications needs to improve. Faculty should be conscientious about visiting high schools, as most have a limit on how many times a specific schools can visit. Focused visits, such as a guest lecture in an art or English class on a particular subject with a brief mention of UToledo, are acceptable and don’t apply to the visit limit. Participating in the 1:15 visits and running a diagnostic on program curriculum and its transfer-friendliness are also ways to help with recruitment.
