The University of Toledo Higher Education Program, in conjunction with the LEIDO Academy in the Netherlands, invited 11 American Doctoral students and 5 European higher education practitioners to participant in the China Summer Leadership Academy from May 19 to June 3, 2017.

The 2017 Summer Leadership Academy participants visited five major cities in China, including Beijing, Xiamen, Wuhan, Hangzhou, and Shanghai. Program highlights include two regional conferences focusing on higher education internationalization and quality assurance, site visits to Xiamen University, Wuhan Polytechnic College, Wuhan Railway College, and Shanghai Dianji University, as well as many enriching cultural experiences.

The 2017 Summer Leadership Academy experience provided participants an understanding of the fundamental structure of the Chinese higher education system, its challenges and the trends, the national level internationalization policies, institutional level internationalization initiatives and quality assurance best practices. Participants also gained perspectives on how U.S. higher education institutions, especially community college could collaborate with Chinese higher vocational colleges to better internationalize their campuses. By interacting with higher education administrators, faculty, staff, and students in China, participants were able to develop their ability to communicate effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds.

In addition to the educational experiences, China Summer Leadership Academy participants were able to visit world famous cultural attractions including the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the West Lake, and so on. Emerged in the rich Chinese culture, participants developed a better understanding of the traditional Chinese history as well as its rapid development in the recent decades.
