Northwest Ohio Classical Academy (NOCA) is hiring its founding faculty to teach its students when it opens in Toledo, Ohio, in Fall 2019.  NOCA is a state-chartered, publicly-funded, independently-governed, tuition-free, classical school.  It is part of the Barney Charter School Initiative of Hillsdale College, a network of classical charter schools united by curriculum and purpose.  NOCA will initially open K-8 and grow to K-12.  NOCA is now accepting applications from new and experienced teachers for K-5.   

Each faculty member is a professional who is esteemed and supported by a faculty of friends striving for excellence.  The faculty is entrusted with practical implementation of the mission of the NOCA community through: engaging the students to pursue the True, the Good, and the Beautiful; conveying knowledge to the students; training the students in virtue; supporting students in the formation of noble character; upholding the reputation of the school community; and passing on Western civilization to posterity.

Qualities and Characteristics

  • Leadership.  A teacher should have the ability to inform and inspire students to learn, and takes responsibility for students’ learning.
  • Intellectual depth and seriousness. A teacher should have an inclination toward a life of the mind, befitting a teacher in an academic institution; a love of learning demonstrated by on-going personal pursuit of knowledge and the passion to share knowledge with others.
  • High moral character. A teacher should generate trust and confidence in students by exhibiting mastery of his or her academic subject, prudence, integrity, fair treatment, truthfulness, equanimity, collaboration, approachableness, kindness, and humility.
  • Commitment to school reform. A teacher should recognize the unique substance and form of classical education and be able to articulate what it is and why it is needed in the modern world. A teacher must be passionate about NOCA’s classical, liberal arts mission.

Knowledge and Skills

  • A broad understanding of the classical liberal arts, its roots in the Western tradition, and its historical presence in American education.
  • Knowledge of the craft of teaching, and the ability to teach well.  Experience in classical education pedagogy is preferred.
  • Partner with parents to teach the minds and form the hearts of students.  
  • Provide content-rich and engaging academic instruction. 
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students.  
  • Plan, coordinate, and continuously improve instruction.
  • Commit to high academic and behavioral expectations for students.  
  • Foster joyful order in the classroom and school, and help inspire in students a sense of wonder and a delight in learning. 
  • Form students and call them to virtuous living.
  • Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
  • Maintain a high degree of energy and personal productivity.  
  • Engage in continual professional reflection.
  • Participate in a professional learning community.
  • Hold a Bachelors degree or higher in Education or a relevant degree.
  • Possession of (or will possess) a valid Ohio teacher license in the appropriate subject area.
  • Pass a criminal background check.

Mom's House in Toledo is hiring a lead teacher in the toddler room (1-3 year olds).  Candidates do not need a teaching license, but it helps if they are working on it.   The hours would work with someone who is taking classes in the evening.  Feel free to share this with anyone.  The position is listed on the c4npr.org website and on indeed.com

  • AA in ECE is the minimum requirement OR a BA in Early Childhood Education or related field, preferred

Plan and deliver engaging math lessons to 11th and 12th grade students enrolled in Basic Geometry and Basic Algebra 2 courses. Implementation and writing of individual educational plans adhering to Board policies and in accordance with state regulations. Work collaboratively with students, parents, and school personnel.
