PGY-4

Fourth Year Residents:

The last two years of the residency are considered senior residency. The residents are the senior-most trainee on their service and are not supervised by any other residents. They are expected to manage patients more independently and to perform procedures more independently with guidance and advice of attending staff. During on-call at night and on weekends, the senior residents are the highest-level residents and evaluate and manage patients independently. However, for surgical procedures and extremely complicated clinical situations, they will have more supervision by a staff surgeon.

Fourth Year Resident Educational Objectives:

1. Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary for the complete management of common problems in general surgery, pediatric surgery, and vascular surgery.

2 . Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to function as the trauma team leader for both adult and pediatric patients.

3 . Demonstrate satisfactory performance as a teacher of junior residents and medical students.
