Medical Spanish I

TITLE: Medical Spanish I

DURATION: 8 in-class sessions (1 hour each) with options for varying levels (beginner, intermediate, proficient); each student must attend 6 sessions and present assigned country project to receive credit for the elective.

LOCATION: UT HSC campus GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Students will be required to attend 6 in-class sessions and present assigned country project in order to receive credit. At each session, a group of students will present on a cultural topic regarding a South American country.  Students will learn health care-related words and phrases which will be useful in the clinical setting, and which they will be able to practice during the sessions. Various methods of instruction will be used, including presentations, role playing (doctor-patient encounters), and translation of medical forms.  This course is appropriate for students with beginning, intermediate and advanced Spanish language skills.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:

  1. Demonstrate mastery of basic Spanish medical terminology, which is useful in interacting with patients in the clinical setting. (EPOs: IPC-3)
  2. Practice appropriate use of acquired Spanish language in a simulated clinical setting (EPOs: IPC-3)
  3. Discuss cultural issues which may affect clinical interactions with non-English speaking Latinx patients, both in the United States and abroad. (EPOs: MK-2)
  4. Practice translation of forms and information sheets from English to Spanish (EPOs: PC-5)
  5. Discuss proper techniques for interpreter use in the clinical setting. (EPOs: IPC-3)

METHODS OF TEACHING: Lecture, small-group practice, cultural presentations, exercises and games.

METHODS OF STUDENT EVALUATION: In-class activities will be used in evaluating student improvement. Practice patient encounters with other students will be used to help evaluate the overall improvement of each student.

Students will give cultural presentations with a group of other students one time during the course of the elective.

ELECTIVE EVALUATION: Students will complete an evaluation form provided to them at the end of the course.
