Sammy Sings. "Harry and the Horribles" record, featuring the (in)famous Vlach Rom vocalist Sammy Stevens, on the Eli Productions label, circa 1968.

Final resting place of Singing Sammy Stevens, featured vocalist in "Harry and the Horribles" record put out by Eli Productions..

"Warning from a Gypsy." First panel from First Romance Magazine (Harvey Publications, St. Louis, June 1950, Volume 1, no. 6.) A bimonthly, at ten cents an issue.

Kolo. "Look chevo! They are doing the kolo!?

"Jitano con caches." Source: Alfaro (1993:93). Depicting peoples of Spain , circa 1750. "Caches" ("mule shears" in Calo; see also tijeras). The term in vernacular use in Spain today means "a hunk" (e.g. a manly man?).

Corto Maltese. A fictional hero most popular in Europe . By his own self-ascription, a bearer of good genes ? (and if you ever pitch your tent in Tintagle, take a bottle of Jack Daniels and a life preserver!).

Defiance . NYPD roundup of fortune-tellers.

Dignity.

A cante jondo primer. Deep Song (= Cante Gitano = Cante Jondo) is authored by Irving Brown, an unapologetic scholar-romantic, and multilingual self-ascribed Romany. His book offers profound insights and invaluable appendices. Why did Brown select Matthew Wood, Welsh Gypsy, for the dust cover?

Corto, in a tight spot, eyes a werfer (throwing knife); perhaps thinking "THIS is no authentic navaja; just some cheap imitation!"

"Gypsy Woman." Old gold.

Ronald Lee. Canadian Rom and Romani rights activst, model shipbuilder, linguist, musician, tin-plater -- and that just for starters ?

Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890). Watch out for this one: adventurer and Gypsiologist; notorious and envied; exemplar of the adventurous male of the Victorian Age. He nearly died a thousand -- make that a million -- deaths, and in the eyes of his many enemies the Devil Himself on vacation. He was a founding member of the Gypsy Lore Society in 1888.
