INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

3 hours.

Discussion topics will be: Fundamentals of Information Technology, decision support systems, knowledge based/expert systems, data communication, database management and their applications in manufacturing. Will include implementation issues of Information Technology in manufacturing. Ph.D. students enrolled at 8000 level will be assigned additional readings and required to complete a research paper.

INFORMATION SYSTEMS POLICY AND ADMINISTRATION

3 hours.

This course is designed for those who aspire to become managers of Information Technology (IT). Various aspects of IT management will be discussed with real world examples/cases. Ph.D. students enrolled in 8570 will be assigned additional readings and required to complete a research paper.

Prerequisite: INFS 6560.

CONTEMPORARY TOPICS SEMINAR - OUTSOURCING

3 hours.

This seminar will focus on current topics in the fields of Information Systems and Operations Management. Outsourcing is the act of transferring some of an organization’s recurring processes to outside providers. Modern outsourcing, which is predominantly concerned with offshore providers, has become a strategic necessity in today’s globalize business environment. Functions commonly outsourced are Information Technology Services, Call Centers and Customer Service. This course will address important topics related to outsourcing in general and off-shoring in particular. These include advantages and disadvantages, cost analysis, vendor and location decisions, contract negotiation, performance monitoring, risk mitigation and cultural integration. Course delivery will be through a mix of discussions, readings, real world projects and cases. The course credits will be counted towards an IT major in the MBA. Outsourcing is widely adopted by today’s companies, and the course will be of significant contemporary value and interest to anyone involved in planning for, implementing and managing or just working in, outsourcing projects. Ph.D. students enrolled in 8930 will be assigned additional readings and required to complete a research paper.
