Welcome to the Department of Early Childhood, Physical, and Special Education! Programs housed within this department include undergraduate and graduate licensure programs in early childhood education, gifted education, physical education, and special education (intervention specialist licenses in early childhood, mild/moderate, moderate/intensive, and visual impairment; MR/DD early intervention certificate, transition to work endorsement). In addition to initial-level licensure programs, the department supports graduate programs that deepen students' level of understanding in the areas listed above. These programs are available at the masters, education specialist (6th year program) and doctoral level (Ed.D. or Ph.D.)
Faculty members in the department are passionate about their work and strive to support students' learning. During the 2004-2005 academic year, the teaching expertise of two faculty members in the department was recognized with teaching awards. Dr. Sally Atkins-Burnett received the "Teacher of Teacher" award from the Toledo Association for the Education of Young Children (TAEYC) and Dr. Brenda Wolodko received the UT College of Education's Outstanding Teaching Award. During the 2005-2006 Academic Year, three faculty members were recognized for their outstanding contributions. Dr. Sally Atkins-Burnett won the Outstanding Research Award from the Judith Herb College of Education, Ms. Amy Allen won the Outstanding Teacher Award from the College, and Dr. Celia Regimbal won the Outstanding Service Award from the Judith Herb College of Education.
In addition to being strong teacher educators, faculty members are also active scholars. They regularly publish their work in peer-reviewed journals, present at national and international professional conferences, and author books and book chapters that further the knowledge base of their respective areas. Faculty members within the department are successful grant writers and currently direct or co-direct 10 externally-funded projects. Some projects provide tuition support for students pursuing careers in special education. Other projects are focused on research and training to improve gifted education in the schools, promoting effective models of early childhood/special education service delivery, and intervention research supporting the development of early literacy. Finally, faculty members in the department are committed to serve the community in a variety of ways. In addition to being active in department, college and university service, faculty members regularly serve on the Board of Directors and Advisory Boards for national, state, regional, and local organizations. Faculty members serve as reviewers and editors for peer-reviewed journals, review federal grant proposals, and engage in other scholarly service.
