Welcome to the department of Curriculum and Instruction! Programs housed within this department include undergraduate and graduate licensure programs in Middle Childhood Education, Adolescent and Young Adult Education, Career and Technical Education and Foreign Language Education (see contact information below). Special programs in Literacy and graduate degrees in Educational Technology are also provided. In addition, the department offers a variety of master’s degrees, specialist degrees and doctorates (Ed.D. and Ph.D.).
The department has over 25 full-time faculty members who have achieved national and international prominence in their respective fields. Several faculty have held or currently hold administrative assignments within the Judith Herb College of Education and across campus and many have significant responsibilities in state, national and international organizations and agencies. The department has outstanding secretarial staff and support personnel in the College advising office who, like the faculty, are highly student-oriented.
Faculty in Curriculum and Instruction are well-known for their excellence in teaching and include one former recipient of the University of Toledo Outstanding Teaching Award. The department encourages faculty to focus on student-oriented teaching, advising and mentoring, and the department exemplifies the mission statements of both the University and the Judith Herb College of Education. In addition, the faculty are active scholars and researchers. In science education, for example, faculty members have received several million dollars in grants from the state and national governments. Faculty also continue to publish each year many journal articles (state and national), chapters in books and books. They present numerous scholarly papers at state, national and international education conferences. Many faculty are further involved in working with state, national and international agencies designed to improve education in the state, the nation and the world.
Moreover, faculty members are deeply involved in service both internal (department, college and university) and external to the state, nation and community. They serve on local and state committees, national and state board of directors and advisory boards and assist local schools and community groups.
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction is proud of its past accomplishments and excited about its future prospects. As we continue to play a prominent role in preparing teachers for Ohio schools and for schools across the nation, we will continue to strive to provide prestigious programs in a premier learning environment. We invite you to become a partner in that learning environment by becoming an undergraduate or graduate student in our department and a proud alumnus of the University of Toledo!
