She received her Ph.D. in personality and social psychology from New School University in New York City. As a doctoral student she was a guest researcher at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in behavioral medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University. She has been involved in several epidemiological studies looking at psychosocial factors and health. She taught developmental psychology at the community college level and held a variety of administrative positions in community colleges. Her current research interests include the relationships between social policy and education in the US and in other countries, urban education issues, and the role of educational institutions in human development. In addition to developmental psychology, Dr. Edwards teaches courses in social foundations of education, educational policy, and comparative education. Dr. Edwards has served on the Policy Committee for Workforce Development for the U.S. Department of Labor and the Research Council of the American Association of Community Colleges. She has also been involved in higher education accreditation and has been a Consultant/Evaluator for the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association since 1995.
