Dr. Joan Kaderavek has been named as a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association; she will receive the award in New Orleans at the National Convention in November, 2009. Dr. Kaderavek also has been named as a Fulbright Scholar and will be in residency at the “All India Institute of Speech and Hearing,” Mysore, India in January-February 2010. She has recently completed a textbook for speech-language pathology undergraduate students titled: “Language Disorders in Children: Fundamental Concepts in Assessment and Intervention.” The textbook will published in February, 2010 by Prentice-Hall/Allyn & Bacon.

Dr. Dale Snauwaert, Professor in the Department of Foundations of Education also presented a paper at the Ineternational Institute on Peace: Human Rights and Democracy: An Ethical and Political Framework for Peace Education. Paper presented at the International Institute on Peace Education, Budapest, Hungary, July 27, 2009.

In June, 2009, Dr. Snejana Slantcheva-Durst, Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership, was the Project Director of a two-year project supported by the EC-US ATLANTIS Program for Transatlantic Collaboration (a grant administered by FIPSE in the US), took an 8-member team of faculty and students to Bulgaria, to participate in an international conference on Aligning Educational Systems: Recognition, and Accreditation of Short-Cycle Higher Education Programs in Europe and the United States. The team included Dr. Snejana Slantcheva-Durst, Dr. Penny Poplin Gosetti, Dr. Ron Opp, Dr. Dan DeVries, David Beaumont, and Jamilah Jones from the University of Toledo, and Gretchen Carroll and Dr. Rose Kuceyeski from Owens Community College.
The three UT students, Dan Devries, David Beaumont, and Jamilah Jones, presented their research at the conference.
The ATLANTIS Program Project will also be hosting a conference in Toledo in October titled Short-Cycle Higher Education in the United States and Europe: Educational Partnerships for Economic and Community Development. The conference organizers are excited to have an association of Dutch and Belgian Higher Education Professionals, called ‘LICA’, participating in the Toledo conference, as well as teams from Bulgaria, the UK and Canada.

Education Day 2009 was successful for UT students with 61 schools interviewing, 200+ students and alumni attending, and 561 interviews occurring in one day, April 24! Career Services hosts this event yearly with the Judith Herb College of Education, Counselor Education Department, and Speech Pathology Department’s assistance in relaying the message to current students. This event continues to be very beneficial to our students and alumni by providing same-day interviewing with schools from all across the nation: Florida to Alaska and California to New York. Over one-half the school districts represented were offering positions within the State of Ohio.

The 2009 UT3 and UT3 Noyce Recognition Awards Dinner was held at the University of Toledo on April 27th, 2009. Numerous recognitions were given out to the 2008 UT3 Noyce Scholars, the UT3 Teaching Licensure Recipients, the UT3 Teacher Candidates, Alumni, Interns, Executive Board Members, School Administrators, Mentor and Cooperating Teachers, UT and JHCOE Faculty and staff, and many others. Charlene M. Czerniak gave a presidential speech and received an award at the Annual International Meeting of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST). Czerniak invited Linda Darling Hammond to talk at the NARST conference as the keynote speaker. Darling Hammond is a Charles E. Ducommon Profesor of Education, was the one of the finalists considered to serve as US Secretary of Education under President Barak Obama. Darling Hammond’s work is highly recognized in education.
Ashley Holden (Middle Childhood Education) and Kelsy Wermer (Spanish Education) received two of three of the Frank E. Horton President Scholarships. The criteria for this scholarship include academic merit, financial need, work experience, honors and awards, campus and community involvement, and an essay on goals.
The Judith Herb College of Education’s Student Affairs Committee had its first annual Graduate Student Research Symposium on Friday, April 24, 2009. Graduate students enrolled in any program of study in the College of Education were invited to present their research at this symposium through poster presentations. Dr. Joan Kaderavek, Professor in the Department of Early, Special and Physical Education was a co-author in Emergent Literacy: Lessons for Success. Sakui Malakpa, Professor was named as one of four Outstanding Teachers by the Academic Honors Program. Sakui’s award was presented by Provost Rosemary Haggett at a special reception and program on Monday, April 20, 2009.
On April 4th, Education majors, Jessica Goad, Ashley Holden, Laura Rodriguez, Gina Smith, and Kelsy Wermer were offered membership into Mortar Board, a National College Honor Society which recognizes students from the junior and continuing senior classes for their achievements in the three important areas of leadership, scholarship and service. In order to gain membership into this prestigious organization, individuals must have shown exemplary performance in the leadership, scholarship and service, have a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA and pass through the selection process conducted by the current Mortar Board class.
Kelsey Wermer (Spanish Education) was accepted into Blue Key National Honors Society. Kelsey was one of 13 upperclassmen selected because of her campus leadership, scholarship, and the promotion of the University of Toledo. Kelsey also received one of four University Women’s Commission scholarships. Receiving the scholarship was based on academic achievement; support of women’s and gender issues, and campus and community involvement.
Angela DeAngelo, Ph.D student in Higher Education had her Masters thesis published into a book entitled “Student-Centered Orientation Courses: College Transition and Successful Foundations”.
