Residency Goals and Objectives

It is the intent of the Surgical Residency Program at the University of Toledo to develop physicians who are clinically competent in general surgery. Physicians completing this program will be eligible for certification by the American Board of Surgery with an ultimate goal of a 100% pass rate on this examination.

To achieve this goal, the program has the following objectives:

  1. To provide an educational environment in surgery so that the post-graduate trainee receives and utilizes adequate knowledge and experience to function as a surgeon in the field of general surgery following conclusion of five years of progressive education and training.
  2. To provide the resident the opportunity to learn and understand the fundamentals of basic science as applied to clinical surgery.
  3. To instill in the resident a strong sense of honesty, integrity and compassion in patient care.
  4. To instill in the resident the lifelong discipline to continually learn new developments and changes in patient care so as to best serve their patients.
  5. To instill in the resident a sense of responsibility to disseminate new knowledge and teach other health professionals and colleagues.

Receive a progressive education with increasing responsibilities in the broad field of general surgery

This residency program is established so that the residents receive a progressive education with increasing responsibilities in the broad field of general surgery over a period of five years. This program is designed in such a fashion that the resident receives education in the evaluation of the patient, appropriate workup to establish adiagnosis, management of patients and any complications of the disease or treatment in the broad field of general surgery - specifically, diseases of the head and neck, breast, skin and soft tissues, alimentary tract, abdomen, vascular system and endocrine system; the comprehensive management of trauma and emergency operations, and surgical critical care. The resident will also receive education and clinical training in the surgical subspecialties to establish and understand basic principles of pre-, intra-, and postoperative management of patients in cardiothoracic surgery, plastic surgery, pediatric surgery, transplant surgery and vascular surgery as well as in the overall management of patients with common problems in urology, neurologic surgery, orthopedics and anesthesiology.
