Research and Teaching Interests
Dr. Phillips works to develop novel measurement methods to assess new solar cells,
particularly thin-film materials, and to that end builds equipment to enable measurements
and depositions during the manufacture of the solar cell. Dr. Phillips' goal is to understand and eliminate recombination in thin film photovoltaics
to increase their efficiency in generating energy from sunlight. In particular he
focuses on CdTe, perovskites, and other materials emerging as competition to the classic
silicon wafer. He also studies how to improve tandem solar cells, those with multiple
transparent layers to absorb more energy from the full range of light given off by
the Sun, by investigating new materials for each layer of the solar cells.
