I completed medical school in India and residency at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and life sciences (UTCOMLS). I joined the faculty at UTCOMLS in 2006 after completing my fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Michigan. As an infectious disease physician in Pediatrics, I take care of children who have serious infections like HIV, bone and joint infections, infection of the heart, newborn sepsis, meningitis, etc. A critical part of practicing infectious diseases is preventive care and hence advocacy for vaccination of children. WHO (World Health Organization) recognizes antimicrobial resistance as one of the top ten threats to global health. Antimicrobial resistance is the ability of bacteria, parasites, viruses and fungi to resist medicines and threatens to send us back to a time when we were unable to easily treat infections such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, gonorrhea, and salmonellosis. The inability to prevent infections could seriously compromise surgery and procedures such as chemotherapy. Indiscriminate use of antibiotics drives up resistance to them. As infectious disease physicians we are the stewards of the use of antimicrobials and therefore decrease the drive to resistance in these organisms.
My practice location is both in-patient and ambulatory at ProMedica Ebeid Children’s Hospital and Nationwide Children’s Hospital - Toledo.
