English Department Scholarships

The major English Department scholarships are awarded each spring for the following year. English Majors are also eligible for College of Arts and Letters humanities scholarships; these are listed on the Arts and Letters Scholarship Application form.

Brand Scholarship

The Jeanette Nuneviller Brand Memorial Scholarship for English Majors consists of five awards of $4,000 each for the academic year 2019-2020.

All declared English majors are eligible if they are full-time students and have between 24 and 88 university credits earned. Exceptions can be made for students with more than 88 credits if they are likely to require more than one year to complete the English major. Candidates with a demonstrated interest in teaching, writing, the teaching of writing, or drama will receive preference.

Interested students should submit the following:

  • A letter of interest describing your academic experiences, strengths and goals
  • An essay, of between 5 and 10 pages of academic or creative writing
  • A degree audit report

All applications must go through the Financial Aid Office scholarship application webform.

A graduate of The University of Toledo, Jeanette Nuneviller Brand taught English at DeVilbiss High School, where she served as English Department Chair and Assistant Principal. A scholarship fund to benefit students in the English Department at UT was established in her memory by her husband, Robert E. Brand.

Shapiro Senior Scholarship

Six scholarships of $4,000 and two of $8,000 will be awarded to 2019-2020 senior English Majors with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Students will apply for this scholarship in the spring of their junior year. Awards will be made by the Shapiro Scholarship Selection Committee and announced by letter. The award will be used toward paying tuition and other academic fees.

Applications must include a writing sample (a substantial paper on a literary or linguistics subject or a substantial creative piece).

All applications must go through the Financial Aid Office scholarship application webform.

Students are also urged to apply for Arts and Letters Humanities Scholarships through the Arts and Letters Scholarship Application form.

Conrad Scholarship

The Nicholas and Jeanne Conrad Scholarship will consist of a single scholarship of $1,000 to be awarded to an outstanding English major. To be considered, submit an application through the the Financial Aid Office scholarship application webform including an essay of no more than 500 words explaining your goals as an English major, and, in general, the value of the major in relation to the contemporary world and the role of the humanities in an era that emphasizes scientific and technical fields. The minimum GPA for this scholarship is 3.0.

Funding for professional travel

English majors can apply for funding to offset the cost of travel to refereed, competitive scholarly conferences of an academic nature. See the application form for details. The form should be submitted to the Shapiro Endowment Committee, care of Natalie Hefner in the department office.
