Placement Testing for The College of Engineering

Chemistry and Mathematics placement tests are required for all new students in the College of Engineering with exceptions noted below.  This includes all students that have taken Advanced Placement (AP) or post-secondary Chemistry and Mathematics courses during their senior year of high school.

We encourage all students to complete ALEKS placement testing for both Chemistry and Mathematics.  Please click Chemistry Placement Info for information on Chemistry placement testing and click Mathematics Placement Info for information on Mathematics placement testing.  Click the following links to begin your ALEKS Chemistry or ALEKS Mathematics testing.

Chemistry placement testing exceptions

You do not have to take the Chemistry placement test if one or more of the following is true:

  • You have transcripted post-secondary credit for coursework equivalent to CHEM 1090 or CHEM 1230
  • You have been awarded a score of 4 or higher on the AP Chemistry exam
  • Your major is Construction Engineering Technology, Computer Science and Engineering Technology, or Information Technology

Mathematics placement testing exceptions

You do not have to take the Mathematics placement test if one or more of the following is true:

  • You have transcripted post-secondary credit for coursework equivalent to MATH 1320 and MATH 1330
  • You have transcripted post-secondary credit for coursework equivalent to MATH 1340 or MATH 1850
  • You have been awarded a score of 3 or higher on the AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC exam
  • Your major is Information Technology and your ACT math score is 22 or higher or your SAT math score is 550 or higher

AP tests taken during your senior year

The University of Toledo does not receive official AP scores until mid-July after Rocket Launch has been completed.  Therefore you should take Chemistry and Mathematics placement tests before you come to Rocket Launch, even if you have taken AP Chemistry and AP Calculus tests during your senior year.  You will be able to adjust your Chemistry and Mathematics course registration after Rocket Launch when we receive your AP scores.

If you have access to your AP test scores prior to your scheduled Rocket Launch, you can show your scores to your advisor and they can adjust your initial Chemistry and Mathematics course registration accordingly.  Note that you must have your official AP test scores sent to the University of Toledo (UT) to receive transcripted course credit for any AP courses completed.

Post-secondary credit taken during your senior year

The University of Toledo may not receive official transcripts for post-secondary coursework completed through College Credit Plus or other dual-enrollment programs until after Rocket Launch has been completed.  Therefore you should take Chemistry and Mathematics placement tests before you come to Rocket Launch, even if you have taken post-secondary Chemistry and Mathematics courses during your senior year.  You will be able to adjust your Chemistry and Mathematics course registration after Rocket Launch when we receive your official transcripts.

If you have access to unofficial post-secondary transcripts with final grades prior to your scheduled Rocket Launch, you can show these transcripts to your advisor and they can adjust your initial Chemistry and Mathematics course registration accordingly.  Note that you must have your official transcripts sent to the University of Toledo (UT) to receive transcripted course credit for any post-secondary coursework completed.
