English Department Scholarships

The major English Department scholarships are awarded each spring for the following year. English Majors are also eligible for College of Arts and Letters humanities scholarships; these are listed on the Arts and Letters Scholarship Application form.

Brand Scholarship

The Jeanette Nuneviller Brand Memorial Scholarship for English Majors consists of multiple awards of up to $4,000 each.

All declared English majors are eligible if they are full-time students and have between 24 and 88 university credits earned. Exceptions can be made for students with more than 88 credits if they are likely to require more than one year to complete the English major. Candidates with a demonstrated interest in teaching, writing, the teaching of writing, or drama will receive preference.

A graduate of The University of Toledo, Jeanette Nuneviller Brand taught English at DeVilbiss High School, where she served as English Department Chair and Assistant Principal. A scholarship fund to benefit students in the English Department at UT was established in her memory by her husband, Robert E. Brand.

Shapiro Senior Scholarship

Multiple scholarships of up to $4,000 will be awarded to English Majors with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The award will be used toward paying tuition and other academic fees.

Students are also urged to apply for Arts and Letters Humanities Scholarships through the Arts and Letters Scholarship Application form.

Conrad Scholarship

The Nicholas and Jeanne Conrad Scholarship will consist of a single scholarship of $1,000 to be awarded to an outstanding English major. To be considered, submit an application through the the Financial Aid Office scholarship application webform.   Submit an essay of no more than 500 words explaining your goals as an English major, and, in general, the value of the major in relation to the contemporary world and the role of the humanities in an era that emphasizes scientific and technical fields. 

Funding for professional travel

English majors can apply for funding to offset the cost of travel to refereed, competitive scholarly conferences of an academic nature. See the application form for details. The form should be submitted to Natalie Bullock in the department office.
