ABOUT Jazz Jam Camp

The 13th annual UToledo Summer Jazz Jam Camp is a weeklong jazz day camp at the University of Toledo Center for Performing Arts (CPA) offering all levels of jazz instruction by master jazz musicians/educators. The camp is open to all people ages 12 and up. This camp was established in 2007 with the mission to provide a positive, all-inclusive camp that teaches America's music, jazz, to anyone who is interested. Young or older, experienced or not, we are dedicated to presenting a positive, nurturing educational environment while providing you with the "real deal" about playing and improvising jazz.

The CPA is located at 1910 W. Rocket Drive, Toledo, OH 43606, on the main campus of the University of Toledo. We may also hold some optional performances in the 31Hundred Club, located in the Radisson at the University of Toledo Health Science Campus, 3100 Glendale Ave, Toledo, OH 43614.

TRACKS TAILOR-MADE TO EVERYONE'S NEEDS

Instrumental Jazz  I  Vocal Jazz   I  Teacher Training (performing or non-performing) | Jazz Appreciation

The Jazz Jam Camp is the place where ALL levels of jazz students can discover and achieve their jazz potential through the study of jazz in one of four exceptional program tracks: instrumental jazz, vocal jazz, teacher training (performing or not performing) and jazz appreciation.

ALL AGES & SKILL LEVELS The curriculum is designed to provide fundamental, intermediate and advanced jazz experiences for interested students from middle school through high school, undergraduate and graduate college students, and teachers desiring to refine and develop the pedagogy of Jazz.

The camp provides a positive and fun learning environment through PLAYING IN COMBOS as well as studying jazz theory classes presented from beginning through advance level; master classes, jam sessions, performances. Participants immerse themselves in improvisation, performance, arranging, and pedagogy with established professional jazz musician/educators.

INSTRUMENTAL TRACK

VOCAL TRACK

The vocal program offers a positive environment for vocalists to develop their skills in jazz style, rhythm, scat singing, and Jon Hendricks’ "vocalese" singing techniques. Ensembles emphasize the vocalist with a combo. The vocal track combines with the instrumental program for master classes, nightly performances, jam sessions and a recording session.

TEACHER TRAINING

The teacher-training program is designed for current and future music educators interested in teaching jazz. Practical experience is learned through observation of the ensembles and in classes, presentations of jazz pedagogical material for all levels of jazz students, methods and materials for teaching improvisation, conducting a jazz band and various other topics concerning jazz education and program development. Participants may elect to perform or simply observe during the week-long institute. (Note: Special discounts available for teachers - see FEES below.)

Jazz Appreciation

Those who are not musicians or music educators may elect to participate in our Jazz Appreciation track. Through listening, observation and some entertaining demonstrations, participants will learn how to listen to jazz and what to listen to. This track is designed for people who would like to know more about America’s classical music.

ADMISSION/FEES

WE ARE AN ALL-INCLUSIVE CAMP, and will find a place for everyone who is interested in participating in the camp. Ages 12 and up, including adults of any age. 

Register now and pay tuition later! (note: registration is closed for 2019)

• The total camp fee is $500 ($450 + a non-refundable registration fee of $50)
• Camp fee covers all course materials and lunch daily. 
• Register by May 15 and save 10% off the ($450) camp fee!
• Registration fee is due when you register! 
• Camp fee balance ($450) is due June 23, 2019

Parental Permission for those Under 18

Parental permission is required for anyone under 18. Download the minor consent form. Please note that Jazz Jam Camp is a day camp only, not an overnight camp. Discounts on overnight accommodations are available at the Radisson Hotel or in a dorm room for out of town participants and their chaperones. All out-of-town minors must be accompanied by a parent/guardian-approved adult outside camp hours - no exceptions! See the Housing section for details on reserving a room.

• A non-refundable application fee of $50
  

• Register by June 15, 2019 or a $25 late fee will apply. Registrations may be accepted after that time if space is available.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

For performing participants: We would like a verbal or email recommendation from your band director or private teacher. Although not necessary, submitting a recording in MP3 format to give us a better idea of your level, it will assist us in planning the groups and adjunct faculty to give you the best experience possible. Ideally a medium swing tune and song of contrasting style and feel would be excellent. If you are new to Jazz, simply a few favorite scales or even a classical piece is acceptable.

This can be emailed to jazz@utoledo.edu and be sure to include your name in the body of the email…and on the recording before you start playing.

NO MP3 is required for the Teacher Training (Non-performing) tracks.

Housing (optional)

Our optional performances; jam sessions and the Friday concert will most likely be at The Radisson Hotel on the Health Science Campus of the University of Toledo, in the 31Hundred Restaurant and Bar. For participants from out of town, we have a discounted rate at the Radisson that is available, or a campus dorm room can be acquired. Minors (Under age 18) must be chaperoned outside camp hours!

The University of Toledo is responsible for all minor age campers in its care only during the hours of the camp. We do not provide overnight supervision! The parents/guardians of underage campers, or the responsible individuals they designate, are responsible for underage camp attendees outside camp days/hours. Please make these arrangements in advance or your child will not be able to attend the camp and you will need to pick up your child.
