Timothy Brakel

Dr. Timothy Brakel, Professor of Music Education at The University of Toledo Dr. Timothy D. Brakel is Professor of Music Education at The University of Toledo with his primary duties focusing on instrumental music education.  He has also served as the Chair of the Department of Music and led a successful National Association of Schools of Music accreditation review, a building renovation and increased scholarship contributions.  He has presented nationally and internationally on the topics of teacher leaders, teaching styles, music technology, music adjudication, the interdisciplinary curriculum, student teaching, music teacher evaluation, instrumental music attrition and the National Standards of Music Education.  His research interests are teacher leaders, instrumental music, contest adjudication, and leadership.  He is a certified John Maxwell Team Leadership Trainer, Coach and Speaker.  His research has been published in the Journal of Band Research and the Southeastern Journal of Music Education.  His public school teaching experience includes teaching band and choir in Indiana. 

Dr. Brakel has appeared as a clinician, recitalist, and adjudicator throughout the United States.  He has been a guest conductor on numerous occasions including the Western Jamaica International Music Festival.  Dr. Brakel has performed with musical groups representing a wide spectrum of musical styles – concert bands, symphony orchestras and jazz ensembles.  He has performed with Manhattan Transfer, Maureen McGovern and the Utah Symphony under the direction of Keith Lockhart.  Dr. Brakel also appeared on Utah Public Radio to discuss the parent’s role in developing musical talent in young children.  Dr. Brakel is a member of the National Association for Music Education, Contributions to Music Education Research Committee, and Phi Kappa Lamda.  He also serves on the Board of Education for Bedford Public Schools (Temperance, MI).  Dr. Brakel taught music education at Weber State University, Ogden, Utah prior to his appointment at The University of Toledo.  A former student of Dr. Eugene Rousseau, Dr. Brakel received a Doctorate in Music Education degree from Indiana University where he later served as Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Education.
