Department of Music

Mission Statement

The Department of Music provides a comprehensive education in classical and jazz music traditions and offers a variety of musical opportunities and experiences for our students, the University, the greater Toledo area, and the global community.

  • Offering a comprehensive, NASM accredited undergraduate curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Mulit-Age: Music Education, and Bachelor of Arts Degrees; the Music Minor curriculum including concentrations in Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Jazz, Keyboard, Music Theory, Music History and Literature, and Music Technology.
  • Offering a comprehensive, NASM accredited graduate curriculum leading to the Masters of Music and Masters of Music Education degrees.
  • Providing music classes for the University’s core curriculum and required music courses for early childhood and middle childhood education majors.
  • Offering students the opportunity to increase their global awareness and sensitivity to cultures through its Cultures of Non-western Music, and History of Jazz course offerings, and through international touring opportunities for performing groups.
  • Meeting the needs dictated by new innovations in technology and integrating technology into a total learning process for all music students.
  • Enhancing the cultural life of the university and community by providing concerts and sponsoring musical events on and off campus, stimulating cultural growth and understanding through regional, national, and international concert tours.
  • Providing a learning environment that fosters and nourishes creative thought.
  • Encouraging personal development and individual growth of the music faculty through continued professional study, research and scholarly activity, performance, and community and global outreach.
  • Serving as a professional resource by contributing expertise to various university and outreach programs and activities.
