About Our Camps
Established in 2025, The University of Toledo’s Judith Herb College of Arts, Social Sciences and Education’s Herb Innovation Center (THInC) summer camps for incoming third through ninth grade students will focus on Literacy. Campers will engage in reading, writing, and illustrating, or AI, data, and media literacy hands-on learning experiences to improve their literacy skills.
Make a Book: Reading, Writing, and Illustration Camp
Dates: July 13 - 17, 2026
This fun, hands-on camp helps kids entering grades 3–5 build their reading and writing skills while exploring their creativity. Throughout the week, campers will learn what it’s like to be a real author and illustrator. They will read short stories, practice writing their own ideas, and create artwork to go with their words.
Over five half-days, campers take part in 15 engaging lessons that guide them from brainstorming to making a finished, professionally bound book. At the end of the week, they’ll share their work in a friendly read-aloud celebration.
This camp is great for all kids—confident readers and writers as well as those who could use extra support. Everyone will leave proud of what they created!
Hands On AI, Data, and Media Literacy Camp
Dates: July 20 -24, 2026
This camp for students entering grades 6–9 helps kids build the skills they need to safely and confidently navigate the online world. Campers will learn what AI is, how to understand and use data, and how to tell whether information they see online is accurate.
Through fun, hands-on activities, students will try out simple AI tools, explore real data, and learn how to spot misleading or unreliable content. These skills support school success and are helpful on many standardized tests.
Over five half-days, campers will participate in 15 engaging lessons focused on AI, data literacy, and media literacy. At the end of the week, they will create a final project to show what they’ve learned in all three areas.
