Meet the Department's Class of 2025 Distinguished Alumni

Dr. Owusua YamoahDr. Owusua Yamoah

(SISS Ph.D., 2019)

Dr. Owusua Yamoah is a research scientist and community-engaged research lead at the Mary Ann Swetland Center for Environmental Health at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She is also a research fellow at the University Hospitals Diabetes and Metabolic Care Center.

Her research leverages the lived experiences of low-resource communities and patients to inform policy, system, and environmental changes within the food system to advance health. In the past 5 and half years (since graduating from UT), she has received over $10 million in grant funding as a Principal and Co-Investigator from several funders including the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institute of Health (NIH), and the Foundations for Food and Agricultural Research (FFAR), to support environmental health research.

Dr. Yamoah received her Ph.D. in Spatially Integrated Social Sciences (SISS) from The University of Toledo, an M.A. in Urban Studies from Minnesota State University, and a B.Sc. in Development Planning from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana.

Eric Wagner has been the zoning administrator for Monclova Township for the last 23 years. Monclova Township is a suburban and rural community located in the Toledo, OH, metropolitan area.

In addition, Wagner has been active in many professional planning organizations. He has been the assistant director of the NW Ohio section of the American Planning Association, APA-Ohio, for 22 years and was a past trustee of APA-Ohio at the state level. His interests are in zoning practice, new urbanism, sustainable development, and mass transit issues.

An active member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), Wagner has been involved with several local community planning projects. He assisted in conducting urban design charrettes for the Walk Westgate and the Renaissance Old West End projects and worked with Sylvania Avenue Neighbors on a placemaking study. He has also served as a past president of the Toledo History Museum.

Wagner has a B.A. in Geography and an M.A. in Geography with a concentration in Urban Planning, both from The University of Toledo.

UToledo Ecologist Collaborates on New Research Into Arctic Climate Change

With Earth’s northernmost polar regions thawing, climatologists have long been raising questions and concerns about what will happen to the significant caches of carbon stored in the cold soils of the Arctic.

The University of Toledo’s Dr. Michael Weintraub, a soil ecologist and professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences, recently collaborated on new research exploring this question at one of the region’s longest-running ecosystem experiments.
