Elective Description/ Requirements:
This course is designed to give M3 students the opportunity to explore their career
expectations, comparing and contrasting these with a career in Emergency Medicine.
M3 students will spend approximately 2 weeks experiencing the elements of a career in Emergency Medicine. Students will be incorporated into the team, allowing a closer investigation of the student’s’ career expectations including work hours, work settings, required tasks, and work-life balance. Students should reflect on how their career goals parallel the expectations and demands of a career in Emergency Medicine.
Length of Clerkship: 2 weeks
Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:
- Describe their own expectations with regard to the career expectation process and discuss that process with a career advisor. (EPOs: PBL-1, PBL-3)
- Demonstrate interest in the career exploration process and discuss how their skills and interests align with the potential specialty choice. (EPOs: PBL-1, PBL-3)
- Explain work hours, work tasks, settings, salary, job outlook and work-life balance corresponding to specialties they are considering. (EPOs: PB-2)
Professionalism: Students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the current Educational Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.

Assessment Methods:
- Director will design specific EM content to be reviewed on Blackboard including but
not limited to:
- Common EM Topics
- Work/life balance
- Relevant resources to review
- Students will mee with Advisor or Clerkship Director, Dr. Williams, at least 1 time
during the 2 weeks (upload to Blackboard).
- The director will maintain an "open door" policy for students to request meetings (during available office hours) at any time during or after the rotation for ongoing discussion, and questions regarding career and continued learning.
- Students will receive 16 hours of clinical exposure with different faculty members. Combination of days, afternoons, and overnights available.
- Daily feedback assessment per shift for preceptor completion.
- Student will complete a Career Exploration reflection. (Upload to Blackboard)
