Elective Description/Requirements:
The purpose of this rotation is to provide students with an overview of the clinical specialty of General Internal Medicine in a rural setting (Adrian, MI). Students will work in a variety of outpatient, inpatient and continuing care sites. Students will see common adult diseases including Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Coronary Artery Disease, Congestive Heart Failure, Hyper/Hypothyroidism, Electrolyte Disorders, COPD, Acute/Chronic Renal Insufficiency, Anemia, Pneumonia, Diarrhea, Arthritis and Other Musculoskeletal Conditions.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:

  1. Interview and examine patients with the most common adult diseases. (EPOs: PC-1, IPC-1)
  2. Recognize the symptoms and signs of the most common adult diseases. (EPOs: MK-4, PC-1)
  3. Discuss the management of common adult diseases. (EPOs: MK-6, PC-8, SBP-1)
  4. Interpret basic laboratory and radiographic studies. (EPOs: PC-6, PC-7)
