Elective Description/Requirements: This elective is designed primarily for fourth-year students who want additional experience in evaluation, diagnosis and management of neurological disorders. This elective is offered to students who have successfully completed three years of medical school as well as the required neurology clerkship. Responsibilities include evaluation and management of patients in the outpatient and inpatient settings. 

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

Links to Core Competencies/Educational Course Objectives: At the end of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Develop clinical neurological skills including history taking and examination skills. (EPOs: PC-1, MK-1)
  2. Explain procedural skills such as performing a lumbar puncture. (EPOs: PC-5)
  3. Discuss the management principles of common neurological disorders. (EPOs: PC-7, PC-8)
  4. Discuss the management principles of common neurological emergencies. (EPOs: PC-8)
  5. Discuss the role of various diagnostic tests in management of neurological disorders. (EPOs: PC-6,)

Instructional Methods:

  1. Clinical teaching on rounds and ED.
  2. Clinical teaching in clinics.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of required Neurology Clerkship and third year of medical school.
