Elective Description/Requirements: The student will learn different techniques for examining the eye. This will be in an outpatient setting. Among findings, the student will be able to see diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataract and glaucoma.

Length of Clerkship: 2 weeks

  1. Demonstrate and document the ability to perform and adequate eye examination, including the fundamentals of slit lamp and dilated fundus exam. EPOs: PC-1, PC-2, PC-3, PC-4, PC-6, PC-10, MK-1, MK-4
  2. Evaluate and diagnose common ophthalmic disorders. EPOs: PC-7, PC-9, PBL-7, PBL-5, MK-6, MK-7, MK-8
  3. Distinguish the relationship of ocular manifestations and systemic disease. EPOs: PC-8, PC-10, MK-7
  4. Establish treatment options for basic ophthalmic disease entities. EPOs: PC-8, MK-1, MK-2, MK-4, MK-7
  5. Management of ophthalmic disease in the pediatric and adult patient. EPOs: PC-8, PC-10, MK-7
  6. Management and treatment of emergent ophthalmic disorders. EPOs: PC-8, PC-10, MK-7, MK-9, MK-4
  7. Differentiate what conditions may be safely handled in a general practice vs. those which need to be referred to an ophthalmic specialist. EPOs: MK-16, PC-7, PC-8, PC-10, PC-11

Professionalism: UT/COM students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Core Competencies and the current Educational Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.

Instructional Methods:

  1. Observation of patient examination in a clinic setting.
  2. Supervised examination of ophthalmic patients.
  3. Review of tests including interpretation
  4. Observation of ophthalmic surgery including review of charts and indications for surgical intervention

Prerequisites: Successful completion of the required Surgery clerkships.
