Elective Description/Requirements: Students will participate in all anatomic and clinical activities in the Department of Pathology including surgical pathology, cytology, hematology, chemistry, immunology, microbiology, molecular pathology, genomics & transplant immunology, and attend all departmental conferences and lectures provided during the rotation. Attend a postmortem examination and gross conferences related to cases. Attend various interdisciplinary conferences as assigned.

- Describe the process of tissue analysis in surgical pathology, from examination of the gross specimen through slide preparation, examination, and interpretation (EPOs: MK-4, PC-6)
- Explain the advantages and limitations of exfoliative and aspiration cytology (EPOs: PC-6)
- Discuss the current and future role of molecular diagnostics in tumor pathology and medical microbiology (EPOs: MK-7)
- Describe the scope of testing offered by clinical laboratories (EPOs: PC-6)
- Discuss the principles, strengths, and limitations of representative test methods in several areas of laboratory medicine (EPOs: PC-6)
- Discuss the pre-analytic variables that may affect laboratory test results (EPOs: MK-1, PC-6)
- Explain the benefits and limitations of point-of-care testing (EPOs: PC-6, SBP-3)
- Describe the role of informatics in improving healthcare delivery and reducing error (EPOs: SBP-4)
- Demonstrate how to prepare and deliver a brief, focused presentation using content that is appropriate for the intended audience (EPOs: MK-4, IPC-2)
- Explain the way in which clinical experts with prepared minds can translate benchtop scientific discoveries into bedside clinical advance (EPOs: MK-7, PC-6)

Observation of technologies used in lab medicine to include but not limited to microbiology, transfusion medicine, immunology, clinical chemistry, hematology and molecular
Case discussions and clinical pathological correlation with individual faculty
Didactic sessions to include but not limited to neuropathology, hematopathology, molecular pathology and cytopathology
Review of slides and discussion with faculty (scope time)
