Elective Description/Requirements:
Students will be given an individualized opportunity to participate in the activities of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Opportunities may be available for clinical experience in the operating room, in management of adult and pediatric cardiac surgical patients, or in clinical research. The focus will be the development of an understanding of the basic and clinical sciences as they pertain to cardiovascular surgical procedures and pulmonary resection.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

  1. Obtain and document a surgical history and physical examination. (EPOs: MK1, MK4, PC1, PC6, PBL2)
  2. Describe the indications for cardiothoracic surgical procedures. (EPOs: PC-7, PC-8, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)
  3. Describe the important anatomic findings related to the various normal and pathologic conditions encountered on the service. (EPOs: PC-1, PC-6, MK-1, MK-4, MK-7, MK-5, PBL-2)
  4. Perform preoperative evaluation and describe postoperative ventilator management , pulmonary care, hemodynamic monitoring, pharmacologic cardiovascular treatment, and chest/mediastinal tube management. (EPOs: PC-7, PC-6, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)
  5. Interpret cardiovascular imaging, endoscopic, and diagnostic modalities and recognition of abnormalities. (EPOs: PC-6, MK-4, PC-7)
  6. Describte an understanding of common mechanisms of disease related to acquired cardiovascular disease. (EPOs: MK-4, MK-6, MK-7, PC-7, PC-8)
  7. Describe the key steps of procedures performed while on the service. (EPOs: PC-5, PC-6, PC-7, MK-4, MK-7)
  8. Perform nutritional assessment and ventilator management. (EPOs: MK-4, MK-5, MK-7, PC-7)
  9. Synthesize the basic science of wound healing and wound management and discuss a plan. (EPOs: PC-5, PC-6, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)

Special Requirements:
Rotation requires approval from clerkship director through the coordinator. Participation in night call is recommended because many cases come in after hours. A call schedule will be arranged per individual.
