Elective Description/Requirements:
Students will be integrated into the general surgery service as a member of the surgical team, participating in all aspects of patient management, both inpatient and outpatient, which includes daily rounding on inpatients, completing both history and physicals on clinic patients, working up the preoperative patient, assisting in the operating room and endoscopy.  The student will be expected to complete at least 40 hours per week on the service.  

Length of Clerkship: 2 weeks

Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:

  1. Discuss the etiology of common surgical problems. (EPOs: PC-5, PC-6, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in performing a complete surgical history and physical examination. (EPOs: PC-1, IPC-1, MK-1, MK-4, PC-6, PBL-2)
  3. Implement a plan for diagnostic evaluation. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7, PC-6, PC-7)
  4. Interpret the significance of the history and physical and laboratory and diagnostic findings to formulate a differential diagnosis.( EPOs: MK1, MK4, MK6, MK7 PC6, PC7)
  5. Identify therapeutic options. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7, PC-6, PC-7)
  6. Acquire basic operative skills necessary to perform less complex procedures. (EPOs: PC-5)
  7. Write a complete and accurate daily progress note including interpretation of results of laboratory and radiographic/imaging studies. EPOs: MK1, MK4, MK6, MK7 PC6, PC7)
  8. Acquire skills to assist in wound care and common general surgery procedures. (EPOs: PC-5)
  9. Perform suturing and laparoscopic procedure techniques. (EPOs: PC-5)
  10. Accurately present patient information concerning the patient’s condition, progress and results of laboratory and radiographic/imaging studies. (EPOs: MK1, MK4, MK6, MK7, PC1, PC6, PC7)
