Scholarly Pathway: Rural Health

Purpose
The aim of the Scholarly Pathway of Excellence in Rural Health is to equip medical students with the knowledge, skills, and intent to address healthcare disparities in rural communities through specialized training, clinical rotations, and community engagement. The pathway provides students with hands-on experience in rural medicine, including telehealth, emergency response, primary care, and culturally competent care for underserved populations. It also builds on the UToledo Area Health Education Center’s (AHEC) strong collaborations with rural hospitals, federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), and community organizations to strengthen sustainable environments and improve local health outcomes. It will also inspire and support students to pursue careers in rural healthcare through mentorship, networking opportunities, and scholarships or loan forgiveness programs.
