Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel
John "Jack" Newsome
John “Jack” Newsome, A legal professional with more than 25 years of leadership experience navigating the complex regulatory landscapes of higher education and healthcare, has served as Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel at The University of Toledo since January 2026.
Newsome previously served four years as strategic advisor to the president and seven years as senior vice president and general counsel at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
As UToledo’s chief legal officer, Newsome oversees the Office of Legal Affairs and safeguards the institution’s legal interests, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, while mitigating legal risks across all aspects of educational, research and clinical operations.
As the University’s general counsel, Newsome also serves as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio because the Ohio Attorney General is the statutory legal advisor for all universities in the state.
In addition, Mr. Newsome served as senior vice president and general counsel for Rothman Institute, a privately held provider of orthopedic care based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and as senior vice president and corporate counsel for Continuum Health Alliance, a management services and value-based care organization in Marlton, New Jersey, orchestrating restructuring plans at both organizations.
Earlier in his career, Newsome held the position of chief legal officer at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson and Cooper University Health Care in Camden, New Jersey. He also has experience as an attorney in Pennsylvania and in other leadership roles for healthcare organizations.
Newsome earned his J.D. and Master of Business Administration from Widener University and a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from Thomas Jefferson University.
