Be Prepared for Winter Weather
January 18, 2026
Good afternoon, Rockets,
Winter is here in northwest Ohio. With temperatures forecasted to reach as low as -13 degrees in Toledo factoring in the windchill next week, it is important to take extra precautions to stay safe and warm.
The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for our region due to arctic air arriving this weekend and early into the week with the coldest wind chills expected Monday night into Tuesday.
We shared our annual notice to prepare for winter weather in Friday’s UToledo News (Be Prepared for Winter Weather) and we wanted to elevate that message in your inbox as we get ready for the upcoming cold snap.
- Be prepared: Wear a warm coat, hat and gloves, as well as shoes that give you traction while walking through snow and ice. Frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes, so be sure to limit your time outdoors and cover exposed skin, with particular attention to your hands and fingers, feet and toes, and your face, nose and ears.
- Be mindful: Use walkways cleared of snow to avoid slips and falls. Use handrails where available and take small steps. Give yourself extra time to reach your destination.
- Be informed: Monitor campus communications for messages in the event that weather impacts our operations. We will share such information via a UToledo Alert text message and email, the University website, including utoledo.edu/weather and myUT, as well as our social media channels and local media.
Stay safe this winter season. It is cold outside!
