The Judith Herb College of Education is proud to offer the first online Ph.D. program in Ohio — a doctoral degree in special education curriculum and instruction. 

UToledo offers three graduate degrees in Curriculum and Instruction, with various concentrations: 

Master of Education (M.E.) 

  • For those who wish to become more effective educators or who want a career in educational research 
  • Gain greater expertise in developing curriculum, designing instruction, and assessing and understanding the needs of learners. 
  • Complete the 10-course curriculum on campus and online. 

Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) 

  • For advanced practitioners with a passion for teaching who want more specialized preparation in a particular area 
  • Advance your career and increase your knowledge without the rigorous research focus of a Ph.D. program.  

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) 

  • For teachers and supervisors involved with the curriculum, teaching and supervision aspects of discipline-centered areas of study 
  • Develops researchers and advanced professionals in education 
  • Take research courses and classes based on your interests and goals. The program culminates with completion and presentation of dissertation research. 
  • Doctoral students can concentrate in: 
    • Curriculum and instruction 
    • Educational technology (completed online)
    • Early childhood 
    • Special education (completed online)

Faculty in UToledo’s Curriculum and Instruction program are talented, nationally recognized teachers and researchers. They are committed to our students, as well as the larger community.  

Master’s, Ed.S. and Ph.D. students work closely with expert faculty or conduct research on their own. Students have opportunities to research, present at national conferences and author articles with program faculty. 

Faculty research interests include: 

  • Development and research of online decision-making simulations  
  • Equity and social justice in funding for elementary and secondary education 
  • Analysis of classroom discourse and the processes of learning to teach literacy in culturally diverse settings 
  • Scientific literacy 
  • Multicultural/multiethnic studies focusing on Native Americans’ character education 
  • Pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and learning progressions for science teachers 
  • Integration of technology into the curriculum to enhance the teaching and learning processes 
  • Relationships between early education policy (with a particular focus on public pre-kindergarten and Head Start) and the lived experiences of teachers 
  • Giftedness and gifted education 
  • Impact of learning communities on student learning, the Reggio Emilia approach and children’s play
