A co-recipient of the 2018 Richard M. Summers Graduate Essay Prize for his essay "Queer Power and Hegemonic Subversion in Funny Boy," Sean is taking time off after the M.A. while preparing to apply to Ph.D. programs for the following year.

Darryn was a recipient of 2018 Ernest Gray Award, in recognition of his essay on Shyam Selvadurai. He has entered the M.A. program in English at Miami University of Ohio. His primary interests include postcolonial, transnational, and queer literature.

Darryn talks about his professors at UToledo, the Honors program in English, and his plans for graduate school.

Joe participated in the Honors program in English as an undergraduate and later was co-editor of The Mill, a student-run literary magazine sponsored by the English Department. Joe is now studying in the PhD program in English at Howard University.

Zainab was the English Department's 2018 Outstanding Student. She won the 2018 Shapiro Prize for Best Thesis in the English Honors program and was awarded multiple Dean's Essay Awards for her creative writing. She is now attending the M.F.A. program in creative writing at the University of California at Irvine.

Marisa was co-editor of The Mill literary magazine during her time at UToledo. While an M.A. student, she was awarded the English Department's Graduate Teaching Fellowship to teach ENGL 2710: Reading Fiction. Marisa has entered the Ph.D. program in English at Michigan State University.

Jacob was a co-recipient of the 2018 Richard M. Summers Graduate Essay Prize for his "Subjective Fanatics: Muslim American Livelihood in Mohsin Hamid's The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Ayad Akhtar's Disgraced." He is teaching while considering applying to Ph.D. programs in the fall of 2018.

Thomas has a unique dual specialty in medieval literature and African-American literature. He is now studying in the Ph.D. program in English at the University of Texas at Austin.

As an undergraduate, Savannah was awarded the Dean's Essay Prize for her Departmental Honors thesis on the violence of motherhood in Shakespeare's Macbeth and Coriolanus. She will continue to study Renaissance literature in the Ph.D. program at Western Michigan University.

Phil was awarded the 2017 Nicholas and Gail Conrad Scholarship on the basis of his essay on the role of the English major in contemporary society. He is now in the Ph.D. program in English at the University of Iowa, where he intends to study modern American literature.
