About the President’s Commission on Campus Design and Environment

The University of Toledo President’s Commission on Campus Design and Environment was formed in 2019 and is charged with making recommendations concerning the implementation of the multiple-campus master plan by keeping an eye on the guiding principles. The Commission works through Facilities and Construction to advise University leadership in making wise decisions related to planning, design, construction, renovation/upgrades on all UToledo campuses involving buildings, parking lots, beautification/landscaping, the Ottawa River (on Main Campus), Swan Creek (adjacent to Health Science Campus), and other related natural and built features that significantly change the nature of a building, architecture, or landscape. This Commission’s primary focus will be the following guiding principles:

  • Promote environmental sustainability and energy efficiency
  • Preserve and restore iconic buildings and exterior spaces
  • Create memorable places
  • Honor Ottawa River
  • Enhance campus edges
  • Enrich the campus life experience

The President’s Commission on Campus Design and Environment combines the efforts of two previous committees: The Beautification Committee and the President’s Commission on the River.

The Beautification Committee, formed in 1976, was charged to make recommendations concerning present and future construction and renovation projects, which affect the aesthetic appeal of the University grounds and exterior of existing campus buildings. The committee was guided by the master plan for campus development.

In 2005, the President’s Commission on the River was formed as a result of the 2003 long-range campus master plan. The Commission submitted its initial report entitled “A River That Runs Through It”, which outlined concept plans and recommendations to direct work along the Ottawa River on the main campus of The University of Toledo. The efforts of the Commission focus on beautification, environmental improvements, research, community engagement, public access, student involvement, and education – all focused on the Ottawa River. The Commission has accomplished major advancements in all of these areas since its inception.
